Method
How to calculate your life path number
The Pythagorean method groups your birth date into three parts (month, day, and year), then reduces each to a single digit (or master number) before adding them together. This sequence matters: adding all digits in one pass gives different results and can miss master numbers that appear mid-calculation.
- 01Birth month: single digits stay as is. October (10) reduces to 1. November is 11; most teachers reduce it to 2, though some preserve it.
- 02Birth day: single digits stay as is. Day 27 is 2+7 = 9. Day 29 is 2+9 = 11, a potential master number mid-calculation.
- 03Birth year: reduce all four digits together. 1988 is 1+9+8+8 = 26, then 2+6 = 8.
- 04Add the three reduced parts. Reduce the total to a single digit, unless it lands on 11, 22, or 33.
Example: July 14, 1988. Month 7 stays 7. Day 14 is 1+4 = 5. Year 1988 is 1+9+8+8 = 26, then 8. Sum: 7+5+8 = 20, then 2. Life Path 2.
This method was systematized for English-language readers by Juno Jordan in Numerology: The Romance in Your Name (1965) and extended by Hans Decoz in his numerology framework. It remains the standard in Western numerology practice.
Discrepancies
Why different calculators give different results
Different calculators use different systems. If you have run your numbers on multiple sites and gotten different answers, you have not made a mistake. The sites are using different methods.
Pythagorean (this calculator)
Reduce month, day, and year separately before adding. Preserves master numbers that appear at any point in the calculation. The standard method in English-language numerology since the mid-20th century.
Straight across
Add every individual digit in the birth date without grouping first. For a birthday of 07/14/1988: 0+7+1+4+1+9+8+8 = 38 → 11 → 2. This method sometimes agrees with Pythagorean, which is why people don't notice the error. The two diverge when a master number would appear mid-calculation in the grouped method.
Chaldean
An older Babylonian-origin system that uses a different letter-to-number mapping and different reduction rules. Less common in the English-speaking market but still active in some calculators. If a site's result doesn't match ours and neither the Pythagorean nor straight-across explanations account for it, Chaldean is the likely reason.
The clearest test: run the calculation by hand using the method above. If your result matches ours, you are using Pythagorean. If it matches a different site, that site is using a different system. Both can be internally consistent. What matters is picking one and staying with it rather than comparing results across systems.
Master numbers
Life Path 11, 22, and 33: what they actually mean
Life Path 11, 22, and 33 are called master numbers because they are not reduced further once reached. Each shares terrain with the single digit below it (11 with 2, 22 with 4, 33 with 6), but also carries an amplified layer that the reduced number alone doesn't fully describe.
One useful frame: the single digit describes your natural instinct, how you move without thinking. The master number describes your soul's ambition, the higher-order calling that the single digit is working toward. Most people with a master number life path spend the first half of their lives functioning at the single-digit level and encounter the master number demand in their thirties and forties.
LP 11 / 2 — The Illuminator
LP 2's cooperative sensitivity amplified into perception that borders on psychic. The challenge is that 11 picks up signals faster than it can process them. Anxiety and hyperawareness are the cost.
LP 22 / 4 — The Master Builder
LP 4's foundational patience scaled to vision that operates at the level of institutions, movements, or systems. The pressure is matching that inner scope to real-world execution without burning out on the gap.
LP 33 / 6 — The Master Teacher
LP 6's nurturing care elevated to serving others' growth rather than their comfort. Under strict Pythagorean calculation, 33 is rare: it requires all three parts to reduce to 11. Most people who calculate to 33 using a looser method are actually 6.

Master numbers come with amplified potential and amplified difficulty. Neither is a prize. People who calculate to a master number and feel disappointed can take the single digit seriously; it is real terrain, not a consolation. People who calculate to a single digit and feel excluded can note that every master number is also its reduced single digit. The single digits do most of the actual living.
Quick reference
What each life path number means

Two different questions
Life path vs personal year: what each one answers
Life path and personal year are calculated from the same birth date but answer different questions. Life path is fixed from your birth date and never changes. Personal year changes annually and names the current season in a nine-year cycle.
Life Path 7 in Personal Year 3 is a clean illustration. The 7 is how you're wired: depth-oriented, solitude-seeking, allergic to surface conversations. The 3 is what this year keeps asking of you: more visibility, more social presence. The tension between those two is the year's actual experience.

Personal Year
- Calculated from birth month + day + current year
- Changes every calendar year
- Names the season and current pressures
- The weather on the map
